Week of the Young Child at Lakeland



Jane Booth, director of the Teaching Learning Center, describes the Week of the Young Child Celebration April 14 at Lakeland Community College. The event provided children an opportunity to explore crafts and other activities while adults discussed resources available to the youngsters.

Nominate a scholar-athlete for a scholarship

The second News-Herald Senior Scholar-Athlete award will be presented at halftime of the June 22 News-Herald Senior Bowl presented by Hooley House.

In addition, The News-Herald will be awarding a $500 scholarship to the Senior Scholar-Athlete award winner.

Last year, West Geauga soccer standout and current Penn State freshman Kori Chapic won the first-ever N-H Scholar-Athlete award.

Candidates must be a senior, have at least a 3.5 grade-point average and be a letterwinner in his or her respective sport. Involvement in community services, clubs, groups or organizations is a plus.

Only coaches, administrators or teachers from respective schools can nominate a candidate. All nominations must include a description as to why the candidate is worthy of the award. Coaches, administrators and teachers are encouraged to work together in nominating a candidate.

Finalists will be named prior to The N-H Senior Bowl.

Scholarships available from Geauga County Master Gardeners

Geauga County Master Gardener volunteers are offering two $1,000 scholarships to any Geauga County high school senior or high school graduate who is planning to attend or is attending Ohio State University or the Ohio State University, Agricultural Technical Institute, Wooster Campus pursuing a degree in the related fields of horticulture, agriculture or environmental science.

Applications are available at www.geauga.osu.edu, or by calling the OSU Extension at 440-834-4656. Applications must be received at the OSU Extension Office at P.O. Box 387, Burton, OH 44021, by April 30.
