Painesville City Schools celebrates week of Read Across America (with video)

Juliet Peterson's second grade class at Chestnut Elementary in Painesville got a surprise on March 6 when their superintendent, John Shepard, dropped in on the class with a special reading time.

The story time was part of Painesville City Schools' observance of Read Across America, a national reading initiative that promotes reading to children. The event coincides with Dr. Seuss' birthday on March 2. This year, Painesville City Schools scheduled a week of activities for Read Across America.

Peterson said her class was excited for the superintendent's visit, which occurred on "pajama day" at Chestnut Elementary. In a program called Accelerated Reader, each of Peterson's students met his or her goal for the months of January and February that earned them the surprise.

The students are trying to reach their monthly reading goals in order to qualify for the trip to a Lake County Captains game in May.
